Tuticorin Custodial Death Case: 4 cops arrested, murder charges filed

The Crime Branch of Criminal Investigation Department (CBCID) has so far arrested four assused including an inspector Sridhar of Sathankulam and two sub-inspectors Bala Krishnan and Raghu Ganesh and constable Murugan under relevent sections of the Indian Penal Code(IPC).
The death of father son duo in Sathankulam sparked a nationwide outrage with the state governament passing and order to transfer the probe into the deaths to the CDCIB. A preliminary police probe had found severe injuries in their private parts. A senior officer part of the police probe had said initial findingd show the two wrer stripped, tortured all of the June 19-20 night and a baton inserted into their rectums. The team of 12 CB-CID were conducting inquries simultaneously. The matter will come up before the Madras High Court and CBCID will have to present the developments in the case so far to the court.
Jayaraj, 59 and his son Benicks, 31 were lodged in Kovilpatti sub- jail foe keeping their mobile shop open 15 minutes longer than allowed during the lockdown. The police claimed the father and son fought, were abusing verbally and resisted arrest.
The family has claimed that the two men were brutally tortured while in police custody, pointed out severe internal and external wounds, including rectal bleeding.
According to the timelime releasedby the police, Benicks was admitted to hospital at 7.45 PM and died around 9 PM on June 22. His father Jayaraj, got admitted around 10.30 PM the same night and died around 5.40 AM the following day.
