Justice UU Lalit to become member of Supreme Court Collegium

Justice UU Lalit will now be the new and fifth member of the Supreme Court Collegium after Justice R Bhanumati retired from the apex court on Sunday.
Chief Justice Justice SA Bobde, Justice NV Ramana, Justice Arun Mishra and Justice RF Nariman are members of this collegium. The five senior-most judges of the Supreme Court are members of the collegium.
The collegium selects and culture names for appointment of judges to the Supreme Court. Justice Lalit was made a judge of the Supreme Court directly from the Bar on August 13, 2014. Justice Bobde will retire on 23 April next year.
Justice Bhanumathi was the second woman to be a part of this collegium after Justice Ruma Pal in the last 14 years.
After the retirement of Justice Bhanumathi, Justice Lalit has moved up to number five in the seniority order of the judges of the top court and thus he will automatically become a part of the collegium.
