Government accelerates Srinagar-Leh highway mega tunnel projects

The central government has stepped up the proposed two mega tunnel projects on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway amid tension from China in eastern Ladakh. Under this, work on the Z-mode tunnel project, which had been closed for a year, started a fortnight ago. Not only this, it is targeted to be completed in a record 11 months. In this series, construction work of Asia's largest bidirectional Zojila tunnel is being done on a war footing.

Both the tunnels are very important from a strategic point of view.A senior official of National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHAIDCL) said that after completion of 20 per cent of the work, the construction of the Z-mode tunnel project was stopped in June 2019 due to the bankruptcy of the construction company. had gone. After the completion of the tender process and letter of award of the project, the contract has been awarded to the new company and work has started on 16 July.

The official said that about 80 percent of the work has been targeted to be completed by next June. He informed that the cost of 6.5 km tunnel between Sonamarg and Gagangir is Rs 2379 crore. Six kilometers along the tunnel include a road, two big bridges, a small bridge.

Work has also started on the second mega tunnel project Zojila on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway. The cost of the 14.15 km Zojila tunnel is 4430 crores. The bidirectional Zojila is the largest tunnel in Asia. Its work will be completed by June 2026. Tenders had to be reissued due to the bankruptcy of the previous construction company associated with the project.
