Dalit Labour rights activist Nodeep Kaur's bail plea rejected by Sonipat sessions court: Relatives says, will move to High Court

Nodeep Kaur(23), a Dalit Labour rights activist and a member of the Labour rights organization, is in Karnal jail and her relatives said that they will now appeal to the High Court for her release. She was arrested by the Haryana Police on 12 January. Cases have been registered on Nodeep Kaur under section 148, 149, 323, 452, 384 and 506 of Indian penal code (IPC).

Her sister Rajveer kaur said that ‘Nodeep joined the farmers protest on the Singhu border in November. She was also fighting for the workers who were not getting wages.’ On January 12, police arrested her. Kaur's bail plea was rejected by the Sonipat sessions court. her lawyer said that, in the medical examination after her arrest. The reports revealed that there were marks on her body and private parts. He alleged that Nodeep was sexually assaulted in police custody. 

Nodeep Kaur joined farmers protest at Singhu border with a group of factory workers from Kundali Industrial Area. She said “Workers are also facing the same problems as farmers, and have exploited by employers, withholding their salaries. It has grown ever since they started supporting the farmer's protest. she also alleged that she has been targeted by armed guards of the Kundali Industrial Association and Haryana Police.

“Farmers and laborers are connected, one in fields, the other in factories. Both are being exploited. It is not just the fight of the farmers; it is a united struggle for all of us.” Nodeep Kaur said in a video that was viral on social media, "Farmers and laborers have equal demands and we want to repeal anti-farmer labor laws." 

Her sister Rajveer Kaur said, targeting Nodeep is another example of the state's efforts to discredit the farmers and worker's protest. Their aim is to break solidarity with labor unions. She says, "Nodeep works for the rights of fellow workers. she started working after 12th standard. Rajveer is currently the only person who has met Nodeep in Karnal jail, Nodeep told her sister about the alleged attack by male police officers.

Nodeep is in jail, and her bail plea has been rejected by Sonipat sessions court, saying “the charges against Nodeep are serious in nature, the investigation is still in the preliminary stage and the remaining accused are yet to be arrested." In view of the seriousness of the offense, the applicant does not deserve the concession of bail and the bail application is rejected."
