WhatsApp launches Payments feature in India

Now securely send money on WhatsApp

 

India, November 2020: WhatsApp recently announced that people across India will be able to send money on WhatsApp. This secure payments experience will make transferring money just as easy as sending a message for 2 crore Indians. People can safely send money to their friends, family or acquaintances without having to exchange cash in person or going to a local bank. 

 

WhatsApp has designed its payments feature in partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) using the Unified Payment Interface (UPI), an India-first, real-time payment system that enables transactions with over 160 supported banks. 

 

With this launch, WhatsApp is excited about the opportunity to contribute to the country’s priority of financial inclusion.

 

How to set up payments on WhatsApp: 

The payments feature will automatically appear in your latest version of WhatsApp, both on iOS and Android, just like any other new feature introduced by the platform

·         To get started, open your chat with the person you want to send money to and tap ‘Attach’ (+) as you normally would to send an image, document or contact. 

·         Next, choose ‘Payment’

·         Fill in your debit card details, to verify your card and 

·         Set up your personal UPI PIN 

·         Tap, ‘Ok’ and you’re officially set up. 

 

How to send money on WhatsApp: Sending money on WhatsApp is as easy as sending a message - it's hassle-free and does not require you to have a separate wallet or download a new app.

·         Start by, opening your chat with the person you want to send money to and tap ‘Attach’ (+) as you normally would to send an image, document or contact. 

·         Next, choose ‘Payment’

·         Enter the amount

·         Adding a message is optional and simply helps you keep track of the purpose of your payment

·         Next, verify the transaction with your personal UPI PIN and you’re done!

To send money on WhatsApp in India, it’s necessary to have a bank account and debit card in India. WhatsApp sends instructions to banks, also known as payment service providers, that initiate the transfer of money via UPI between sender and receiver bank accounts. Just like every feature on WhatsApp, Payments is designed with a strong set of security and privacy principles, including entering a personal UPI PIN for each payment. Payments is available now in ten Indian regional language versions of WhatsApp. All you need is a debit card with a bank that supports UPI and you can set it up straight away.
