1700 years old statue of Mahatma Buddha vandalised in Pakistan

Big statue of Mahatma Buddha is vandalised with hammers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. The senior official said that the statue belonged to the Gandhara civilization and was around 1,700 years old.

Four people were arrested in this regard on Saturday. The statue was found during excavations at a farm in Takhtabai tehsil of Mardan district and was destroyed at the behest of a local cleric.

The video went viral on social media in which some people were seen smashing the statue with a hammer. Abdul Samad Khan, director of the Archaeological Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, said on Sunday that the broken parts of the statue had been recovered to assess its archaeological significance.

He told reporters that apparently it is an ancient statue and we lost it. According to the Dawn newspaper, Khan said that the statue was of Gandhara civilization and was about 1,700 years old.

Police have cordoned off the area and captured it. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Archaeological Department tweeted and posted news of 'International Urdu' channel stating that this statue is at least 1,700 years old. Khan termed the demolition of the statue a crime and said that disrespect of any religion is unbearable.
