A new test facility centre of Covid-19 has now been started at the Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) in Dehradun. IIP is a constituent laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) based in Dehradun. Testing of samples of Covid-19 patients using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method has been started in this laboratory. IIP Director Dr. Anjan Ray has stated that “IIP is a petroleum institute. But, This initiative has been taken by the institute in view of the current challenge of Covid-19.”
For this, a laboratory equipped with bio-security technologies has been established in the campus of the institute. Inaugurating the testing facility on Wednesday, Uttarakhand Additional Health Secretary Yugal Kishore Pant said that "this initiative will help speed up the testing of Covid-19 in the state".
Dr. Anjan Ray said that “This Covid-19 test facility based on RT-PCR has been set up by IIP with the financial support of CSIR. Here 100 samples can be tested in a day, following the necessary biosecurity precautions by specially trained staff.”
Dr. Anjan Ray said that, to start this facility, our team was regularly in touch with the Ministry of Health of Uttarakhand and all government hospitals and with the cooperation of all, this Covid-19 sample testing facility has finally been established. After this initiative IIP has also become a recognized laboratory of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for testing of Covid-19. In this test facility, samples of Covid-19 will be tested according to the rules and standards set by ICMR.
IIP has entered into an agreement with All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh and Doon Hospital for guidance and certification of test results in this regard. However, the institute is being provided test kits under the National Health Mission.
The facility set up at IIP has been constructed using temporary porta cabins. Such a model can be easily used in remote areas to build such test facility as per requirement.
This Covid-19 test facility will be run by a team of IIP scientists led by Dr. T. Bhaskar, in which Dr. Devashish Ghosh, Dr. Sunil K. Suman, Dr. Deepti Agarwal and Dr. Dipatarika Dasgupta and other trained technicians.
